#Law School Requirements, Law School Required Courses

This is the list of requirements for completion of the J.D. Degree at UNT Dallas College of Law effective for all students entering fall 2015. We encourage you to read more about the goals underlying these requirements, the first-year requirements, the upper-level requirements, and the writing, research and skills requirements. FIRST-YEAR REQUIRED COURSES

Fundamentals of Being a Lawyer (1 hour)

Civil Procedure (2 semesters, 5 hours total)

Contracts (1 semester, 4 hours)

Criminal Law (1 semester, 3 hours)

Legal Method (1 hour)

Legal Writing and Research (2 semesters, 6 hours total)

Practice Foundation I: Interviewing and Counseling (1 semester, 3 hours)

Property (1 semester, 4 hours)

Note: Some first-year required courses may occur in the fall semester of the second year for evening division students.

SECOND-YEAR REQUIRED COURSES

Practice Foundation III: Business of Law (3 hours)

WRITING REQUIREMENT, RESEARCH REQUIREMENT, AND SKILLS REQUIREMENT

Writing requirement: 8 writing segments and an upper-level writing experience

Research requirement: 8 research segments

Skills requirement: 10 skills segments

THE EXPERIENTIAL REQUIREMENT

Requirement to take at least 2 courses from the following categories: Practicum, Externship, and Clinic. Subject to approval, two courses can be from the same category.

Satisfactory completion of the Community Engagement Program.

Satisfactory completion of the Louis A. Bedford, Jr. Mentorship Program.

THE PRACTICE-RELATED TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENT

Demonstration of basic proficiency as to practice-related technologies, including case management and time-keeping software; trial and litigation software; word processing; and databases.

THE PRACTICE READINESS REQUIREMENT

Satisfactory completion of assessments and activities designed to ensure readiness for entry into practice.
