Andy Law

Andy Law is an associate professor in Industrial Design at RISD and the chair of the Scottish Orkney Island–based charity the Erlend Williamson Art Fellowship. He is also the leader of RISD’s Cluster for Open Data Research (CODR) and former City of Providence commissioner on the Open Providence Commission for Transparency and Accountability. He contributes to a collaborative lecture series in conjunction with the University of Northumbria in Newcastle, UK and is co-authoring a blog around the subject of accessible manufacturing called Medium Tools.

Law was a course leader and lecturer in product design at the University of Edinburgh and University of Dundee, a research fellow at Goldsmiths University of London and the Royal College of Art in London and a researcher at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea in Italy. His work and the work of his students has been widely sold, published and exhibited in the US and internationally.

Before graduating with a Master’s in industrial design from the Royal College of Art in 1999, Law worked in the UK and Italy on several lighting and office furniture projects that were patented in Europe and the US and sold over $60 million worth of products. In 1988 he graduated with a BA in industrial design from Cardiff Metropolitan University. In 1997 he was granted the first-ever patent in the US for an earthquake-proof combined locking and anti-tilt filing cabinet. He also designed the world’s first biodegradable disposable hot cup lid for Edinburgh-based Vegware.
