Yeshiva University LLM | LLM Info





The Cardozo LLM program can be taken either full-time or part-time over the span of one  to three years (or two to six semesters) depending which schedule the student chooses. Cardozo Law School offers four LLM programs to approximately 75 students from around the world. All four programs require the completion of a minimum of 24 units for the receipt of an LLM degree but each program has its own specific focus and related requirements. Foreign law school graduates enrolled in any of the four programs must take the following courses:

  • Introduction to U.S. Law
  • Legal research and writing (two semester workshop)

The four programs available at Cardozo Law are:

The Cardozo Law School Comparative Legal Thought LLM is intended for students with an interest in entering legal academia, although the program is open to students interested in interdisciplinary approaches to law. The program is open to U.S. based and international attorneys and everyone must complete the 24 unit minimum to include:

  • 12 units in courses related to comparative legal thought taken from disciplines such as philosophy, religion, constitutional law, and legal theory
  • 3 unit thesis on a topic selected by the student and approved by the student’s supervising faculty member

Students may also elect to concentrate in Jewish Law as part of the Comparative Legal Thought LLM program through the Yeshiva University Center for Jewish Law and Contemporary Civilization. which requires 10 credits in Jewish Law.

The Cardozo Law School LLM in Dispute Resolution Processes and Advocacy is designed to provide students with the practical litigation and theoretical training needed to participate in alternative dispute resolutions processes. The program fosters an understanding of attorneys as advocates, problem-solvers, and counselors. The program is open to U.S.-based and international attorneys and everyone must complete the 24 unit minimum to include:

  • 14 credits of coursework in ADR and advocacy
  • Completion of a paper focusing on dispute resolution
  • Participation in either an externship, clinical or practical program to develop dispute resolution skills

A wide variety of clinics, externships, pro bono opportunities, and other extracurricular activities such as symposiums and study abroad are available to Cardozo LLM Dispute Resolution students.

The General Studies LLM is a flexible program for both international and U.S. lawyers that allows students to create a customized LLM degree by choosing from Cardozo Law School’s extensive course offerings. Students are required to take:

  • Professional Responsibility or Professional Responsibility for LLM Students
  • 6 credits from courses on content covered by the New York Bar Exam

Students may choose a concentration in the following areas but are free to create a personalized course of study if these do not meet their needs:

  • Alternative Dispute Resolution
  • Corporate and Securities Law
  • Intellectual Property
  • International and Comparative Law

In addition, students in the General Studies LLM Program can participate in an array of clinics to hone their practical skills.

The Intellectual Property (IP) Law LLM at Cardozo Law School provides students with the opportunity to understand and master the complex field of IP law. Students are required to complete a minimum of 14 units in IP coursework and may choose to complete a one or two credit research paper or three credit thesis on an IP topic of their choice. The curriculum of the program is based in three major areas of IP law: copyrights, patents, and trademark, and students are required to take a basic course in two out of three of these areas in their first semester. Advanced courses are also available in areas such as communications law, entertainment law, media law, and cyber law. Students are also placed in part-time internships to enhance their practical understanding of the day to day practice of Intellectual Property Law. Students must write a paper on their internship to receive credit. Internship placements for past students have included Estee Lauder, DC Comics, Kate Spade, PolyGram Records, Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver Jacobson, and Ostrolenk, Faber, Gerb Soffen. The Indie Film Clinic is also open to Cardozo LLM IP students.
