Law Clerks for the 2016-2017 Term

On Monday, June 1, 2015, the Supreme Judicial Court will begin accepting applications for clerkships for the court year that begins on Wednesday, August 31, 2016. Second year law students may apply as soon as their spring 2015 grades (or evaluations) are available. Third year students and law school graduates may apply anytime beginning June 1, 2015. Applications are reviewed and offers are made on a rolling basis. Candidates are encouraged to apply as early as possible, but no later than September 25, 2015.

SUPREME JUDICIAL COURT MISSION STATEMENT:

To promote the rule of law and foster public trust by leading an independent judiciary that assures every person equal access to the fair, timely and impartial resolution of disputes in courts managed with efficiency and professionalism.

LAW CLERK POSITION SUMMARY:

The Supreme Judicial Court has thirteen openings for law clerks for the 2016-2017 court year. The court year runs from Wednesday, August 31, 2016, through Tuesday, August 29, 2017.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Outstanding academic achievement, writing, and analytical skills and legal research ability.

Ability to work professionally, independently, and confidentially.

Successful applicants must submit a final transcript indicating graduation from law school prior to beginning the clerkship. It is not necessary to sit for the Massachusetts bar exam. Law clerks must reside in Massachusetts for the duration of their clerkship pursuant to St. 1978, c. 478, В§ 328.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Paper Requirements

Each candidate must submit in paper form the following materials: (1) a cover letter; (2) a resume; and (3) a writing sample not to exceed ten pages and not edited by another. Applicants must also submit, or cause to be submitted: (1) two letters of recommendation, preferably from law school faculty; and (2) an official law school transcript. To apply to all of the Justices please submit only a single copy of the application with a cover letter addressed to "The Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court." It is helpful for non-faculty recommendations to state the applicant's law school. Applicants may submit an unofficial transcript along with the cover letter, resume and writing sample.

In addition to the above documents, each candidate must complete the Supreme Judicial Court Application for Law Clerk Employment form. This document should be completed online and emailed in PDF form to sjclawclerkhiring@sjc.state.ma.us. The PDF should be titled with your last name, first name and law school as follows: lastname_firstname_lawschool_sjcapp.pdf. Forms that are printed out and filled in manually cannot be processed.
