Oregon State Law





The Oregon Department of Justice is responsible for general counsel and supervision of all civil actions and legal proceedings in which the state is a party or has an interest. The Department, through the Attorney General, also has full charge and control of all the state's legal business that requires the services of an attorney or legal counsel.

The Governor of Oregon is the top executive of the government of Oregon. The governor is the commander-in-chief of Oregon's Military Department. Power is granted to the governor to mobilize and deploy state military forces. The governor has the power to veto legislation, which can be overridden by a two-thirds majority in both houses of the legislature, and can veto particular items from an appropriations or emergency bill while leaving others intact.

The Secretary of State provides strategic, legislative and policy guidance for the agency; provides access to the permanently valuable records of Oregon government and also publishes the Oregon Blue Book and Oregon Administrative Rules; ensures government accountability and that public funds are efficiently and effectively spent on public programs; promotes commerce by enabling the creation of business, commission of Notaries Public and streamlining access to government services and regulatory requirements; and uniformly interprets and applies the election laws.

The State Controller's Division (SCD) provides guidance and leadership to state agencies and other stakeholders in accounting, payroll and fiscal disciplines. SCD statewide programs are accounting and reporting, accounts receivable management, central disbursement processing, and central payroll processing. In addition, SCD provides internal control services, client agency and accounts receivable coordination services.

The State Treasurer is the chief financial officer for the State and is responsible for the prudent financial management of taxpayer dollars. Some of the Treasurer's responsibilities include managing the investment of state funds, issuing all state bonds, serving as the central bank for state agencies, and administering the Oregon 529 College Savings Network.
