Student Legal Services

Student Legal Services

Student Legal Services is one of the services offered by the Associated Students of Oregon State University.  Legal Services are provided to OSU students through Access the Law. Our office provides legal advice and representation to OSU students when they have a dispute that does not pertain to the University.

We are here to assist you with a range of legal matters. Please take a look at Areas of Dispute listed below. If you are OSU student and have a matter that falls within the range of issues which the legal services office covers, or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

AREAS OF DISPUTE

ASOSU Student Legal Services provides legal advice and representation to OSU students when the other party to the dispute is not also an OSU student or a part of the university or one of its administrative units.  Advising which may consist of consultation and, in limited circumstance, representation is provided in the following areas.

  • Landlord/tenant disputes
  • Personal Injury
  • Credit issues including debtor/creditor matters and collections, and bankruptcy
  • Consumer problems
  • Traffic infractions
  • Criminal charges
  • Wills Power of Attorney
  • Uncontested child custody and uncontested dissolution of marriage cases, including child support determinations
  • And various miscellaneous matters including employment, and probate, name changes, disability benefits and social security, veterans benefits, and unemployment benefits

If your issue is not listed here and the other party is part of the university or one of its administrative units, please contact the Office of Legal Advocacy

CONFLICT OF INTERESTS

The service of this office is provided by ASOSU and supported by student fees. Consequently, we have the potential to represent any OSU student. For this reason, we are only able to serve one student in an issue in which the opposing party is another student. Doing otherwise would constitute a conflict of interest for the office. This is performed on a first come first serve basis.

HOW TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT

If your problem falls within the areas of dispute with which our office deals, please make an appointment with one of the two lawyers listed above. Depending on the type of dispute, you will want to meet with one or the other. We strongly encourage you to make the appointment as early as possible. Occasionally, we might have to ask you to wait for more than a week because of scheduling, so please allow some time.

To make an appointment, call us at (541) 737-4165 .

Please specify what your legal matter pertains to and that you wish to schedule an appointment with an attorney.

COST AND FEES

Because the office is supported by student fees, our services are free of charge to OSU students. However, any costs incurred outside the office such as filing fees, service fees and extraordinary postage and copies are the student's responsibility.

CONFIDENTIALITY

ASOSU Student Legal Services office strictly upholds client confidentiality.  This is a law office; anything said in the office does not leave the office. Your confidence and comfort is of the utmost importance to us.
