Law enforcement careers aren't limited to becoming a police officer or FBI agent. Police Officer. Once you are trained as a police officer, you can join any of several units, including the K-9 unit or a gang unit. However, the number of options available to you will depend on the size of the city and the crimes that typically occur there.

Detective. To be a police detective, you will need to work your way up from the ranks as a police officer and take a test. Or, you can take the path of a private detective. Keep in mind that, as a private detective, you may face more legal restraints.

Game Warden. Love the outdoors? Then game warden is the law enforcement career for you. You will patrol the outdoors and enforce laws related to wildlife and hunting. Like other law enforcement officers, aspiring game wardens need to take written and physical exams. They are also authorized to carry weapons.

FBI Agent. To work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, you must pass even more strenuous tests than those required of a police officer. However, FBI agents receive big-league assignments. With the high-profile nature of their work, they are often required to be flexible and willing to move at any time.

Immigration Work. Illegal immigration is a hot topic in the United States, and immigrants keep entering the United States as long as they feel someone is willing to hire them. Border Patrol acts as the boots on the ground to keep illegal immigrants from entering, while Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) handles broader immigration issues.
