#Are There Any Rankings for Online Law Schools? Top Law Schools

Rankings of Online Law Schools

The Internet has revolutionized many aspects of our society and there are now several online law schools offering degrees out there. However, law is inherently a conservative arena, for in law present decisions are determined by examining past decisions that set a precedent. Along these lines, online law schools are still stigmatized and are not yet ranked by any law school ranking.

Personally, I like the idea of online law schools and am open to the concept. However, the reality of online law schools is that at present their graduates fare poorly in the job market as online law schools are not yet considered the equal of even marginal brick and mortar law schools.

Until online law schools become more prestigious, I would focus upon the traditional ABA approved law schools. That being said, if you are in California, which does not require that you attend an ABA a ... Read more »

Criminal statutes that mandate increased sentences for repeat offenders, usually after three serious crimes.

Beginning in the early 1990s, states began to enact mandatory sentencing laws for repeat criminal offenders. These statutes came to be known as three strikes laws, because they were invoked when offenders committed their third offense. By 2003 over half the states and the federal government had enacted three strikes laws. The belief behind the laws was that getting career criminals off the streets was good public policy. However, the laws have their critics, who charge that sentences are often disproportionate to the crimes committed and that incarceration of three strikes inmates for 25 years to life would drive up correctional costs. Nevertheless, the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld three strikes laws and has rejected the argument that they amount to Cruel and Unusual Punishment .

The state of Washington passed the first three strikes law in 1993. Anyon ... Read more »

Though Aristotle is often referred to as “the father of natural law,” [1] this appellation is debatable and arises primarily from the interpretations of Thomas Aquinas. The Stoics asserted that the universe existed according to a rational and purposeful order (a divine or eternal law), and that the means by which a rational being lived in accordance with this order was the natural law, which dictated actions that accorded with virtue. Some of the early Church Fathers sought to incorporate this concept of natural law into Christianity. Thomas Hobbes defined natural law as the way in which a rational human being, seeking to survive and prosper in society, would act. Natural law theories influenced the development of English common law [2]. and featured in the philosophies of Thomas Aquinas, Francisco Suarez. Thomas Hobbes, Hugo Grotius. Samuel von Pufendorf. and John Locke. The concept of natural rights was incorporated in the United States Declaration of Independence .

#Ampere s law

Ampere's law is the magnetic equivalent of Gauss's law. It is different in that it refers to a closed loop and the surface enclosed by it (rather than a closed surface and the volume enclosed by it, as is the case with Gauss's Law). Consider a closed loop, not necessarily a circle, which is broken into small elements of length D L i with a magnetic field B i at each element.

The sum over elements of the component of the magnetic field along the direction of the element, times the element length, is proportional to the current I that passes through the loop.

This is Ampere's law. For the case of a wire, the loop can be a circle drawn around the wire, and since the field is always tangent to the circle, cos q = 1. The circumference of the circle of radius r ... Read more »

The layman's answer would be something along the lines of actions that are in opposition to the laws (statutes) that govern the country. Law students who begin their studies in Criminal Law will grow to realise that a "crime" constitutes many facets which go beyond the "bad act" itself (the actus reus). In looking at whether a person is a "criminal", one has to look at the mental state the person had while committing the crime(his "mens rea"). It would be worthwhile to remember that every person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Criminal law is based on the theory that the defendant is innocent until prov ... Read more »

1) n. an agreement with specific terms between two or more persons or entities in which there is a promise to do something in return for a valuable benefit known as consideration. Since the law of contracts is at the heart of most business dealings, it is one of the three or four most significant areas of legal concern and can involve variations on circumstances and complexities. The existence of a contract requires finding the following factual elements: a) an offer; b) an acceptance of that offer which results in a meeting of the minds; c) a promise to perform; d) a valuable consideration (which can be a promise or payment in some form); e) a time or event when performance must be made (meet commitments); f) terms and conditions for performance, including fulfilling promises; g) performance. #Antitrust Laws - Ayn - Rand Lexicon

The Antitrust laws an unenforceable, uncompliable, unjudicable mess of contradictions have for decades kept American businessmen under a silent, growing reign of terror. Yet these laws were created and, to this day, are upheld by the conservatives, as a grim monument to their lack of political philosophy, of economic knowledge and of any concern with principles. Under the Antitrust laws, a man becomes a criminal from the moment he goes into business, no matter what he does. For instance, if he charges prices which some bureaucrats judge as too high, he can be prosecuted for monopoly or for a successful intent to monopolize ; if he charges prices lower than those of his competitors, he can be prosecuted for unfair competition or restraint of trade ; and if he charges the same prices as his competitors, he can be prosecuted for collusion or conspiracy. There is only one difference in the legal treatment accorded to a criminal or to a businessman: ... Read more »

#Online Programs Could Erase Half of U. S. Business Schools by 2020

Illustrations by Steph Davidson

(An earlier version of this story ran online.)

When Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business launched an online MBA program in 1999, few traditional universities had embraced distance learning. Online degrees were more typically offered by for-profit outfits such as the University of Phoenix (APOL ). whose television ads featured tired working stiffs eager to escape their income bracket, not the future titans of industry top MBA programs look for.

Fifteen years later, 1,072 students are enrolled in Kelley’s online MBA program, more than double the number in the school’s regular two-year program. Tuition for Kelley Direct works out to $61,200 for two years, compared with $93,000 for the on-campus program. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School has 551 students in its online program, more than in its full-t ... Read more »

#Antimatter haze found in thundercloud, and the laws of physics can’t explain it

Six years ago, atmospheric physicist, Joseph Dwyer, accidentally flew his plane into a thundercloud, and right through an unexpected pocket of antimatter. And while we know high-energy positrons - the antimatter counterpart of the electron - can be caused by cosmic rays making contact with the atmosphere, or by particularly active lightning storms, what Dwyer detected could not be explained by either of these scenarios.

"This was so strange that we sat on this observation for several years," Dwyer, from the University of New Hampshire in the US, told Davide Castelvecchi at Nature.

The flight in question took place on 21 August 2009, when Dwyer, then at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida, set out to detect gamma rays (γ-rays) - extremely high-frequency electromagnetic radiation made up of high-energy photons. He installed a particle detector on a Gulfstrea ... Read more »

#Antitrust laws

Antitrust: An Overview

Trusts and monopolies are concentrations of economic power in the hands of a few. Economists believe that such control injures both individuals and the public because it leads to anticompetitive practices in an effort to obtain or maintain total control. Anticompetitive practices then lead to price controls and diminished individual initiative. These results in turn cause markets to stagnate and depress economic growth.

Because of fears during the late 1800s that monopolies dominated America's free market economy, Congress passed the Sherman Antitrust Act in 1890 to combat anticompetitive practices, reduce market domination by individual corporations, and preserve unfettered competition as the rule of trade. The Sherman Antitrust Act forms the foundation and the basis for most federal antitrust litigation.

As for the states, many have adopted antitrust laws that parallel the Sherman Antitrust Act to prevent anticompet ... Read more »

Juris praecepta sunt haec: honeste vivere, autem non laedere, suum cuique tribuere.

Anthony W. Crowell

During the winter of 1890, a dispute arose at Columbia Law School over an attempt to introduce the Case Method of study. The Case Method had been pioneered at Harvard Law School by Christopher Columbus Langdell. The dean and founder of Columbia Law School, Theodore Dwight. opposed this method, preferring the traditional method of having students read treatises rather than court decisions. Because of this disagreement, Dwight and a number of other faculty and students of Columbia Law School left and founded their own law school in Lower Manhattan the following year.

On June 11, 1891, New York Law School was chartered by the State of New York, and the school began operation shortly thereafter. By this time, Theodore Dwight was in poor health, and was not able to be actively involved with the Law School, so the position of dean went to one of the other p ... Read more »

#Arizona law stakes claim over unauthorized campaign signs

With city elections in Phoenix next month and 2016 races around the corner, Arizona regulators are warning people that they might need to pull up stakes on the many campaign signs on lawns and street corners.

Signs that were installed without prior inspection could create danger around utility lines and bring hefty fines, according to a longtime state law.

The Arizona Blue Stake law mandates that anyone doing excavation must have utility lines marked first. It's a law that was enacted in 1974 and has been enforced by the Arizona Corporation Commission.

Recently, the commission has been reminding campaigns and campaign supporters that the law applies to signs staked into turf. Anyone who wants to plant a sign must call 811, the nonprofit call center that arranges for utility locators to mark the locations of utility lines at no charge. The wait is normally about two days.

#Are There Accredited Online Law Schools?

Although accredited online law degree programs will not qualify graduates to practice law in most states, they can provide business professionals or foreign-educated lawyers with a better understanding of the U.S. legal system. Many of these programs culminate in a Juris Doctor or Master of Laws.

Accredited Online Law Schools

In most states, aspiring attorneys must graduate from a Juris Doctor (J.D.) program accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) in order to sit for the state bar examination and therefore practice law. Currently, the ABA does not approve any online J.D. programs. There are, however, schools accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC).

These schools are for business professionals who want graduate law training, lawyers educated abroad or, in some cases, aspiring attorneys. California is the only state that allows graduates from an online school to sit for its state bar ... Read more »

#Arizona-Style Immigration Laws Hurt the Economy

Follow Comments Following Comments Unfollow Comments

With the “papers please” portion of Arizona’s recent immigration law SB 1070 going into effect, civil rights and watchdog groups are in overdrive readying for the litany of purported abuses and complaints. Lydia Guzman, president of Respect Respeto. a civil rights group in Arizona that records abuses at the hands of police, said, “Our hotline has been receiving hundreds of calls a day since the law was implemented.”

Forcibly removing peaceful unauthorized immigrants from the U.S. separating them from their families, property, and jobs, to satisfy arcane labor market regulations created by Progressive politicians, is an appalling indecency. It also inflicts significant economic harm. Arizona’s immigration laws have drastically damaged its economy since mid-2007. The humanitarian arguments may leave those who complain the loudest about unauthorized immigration unmove ... Read more »

Copyright law in the U.S. is governed by federal statute, namely the Copyright Act of 1976. The Copyright Act prevents the unauthorized copying of a work of authorship. However, only the copying of the work is prohibited--anyone may copy the ideas contained within a work. For example, a copyright could cover a written description of a machine, but the actual machine itself is not covered. Thus, no one could copy the written description, while anyone could use the description to build the described machine.

Copyrights can be registered in the Copyright Office in the Library of Congress, but newly created works do not need to be registered. In fact, it is no longer necessary to even place a copyright notice on a work for it to be protected by copyright law. However, the Copyright Act does provide additional benefits to those who register with the Copyright Office. Consequently, copyright registration and the use of a copyright notice is recommended.

#Are Law Firm Websites Evolving Or Dying?

The New York Times lost 80 million home page visitors—half the traffic to the nytimes.com page—in the last two years .

Likewise, traffic to law firm website home pages is down almost 20 percent in the last year. Only 39 percent of law firm traffic now enters through the home page per a study conducted by law firm website developers Great Jakes .

Law firms list their websites in online and offline directories. The home page URL is included on emails, business cards and social media profiles. Search engine optimization tactics are used to draw traffic to the firm’s home page. Website navigation schemas are developed to get users to browse from the home page to industries, areas of the law, about the firm, the people, office locations and articles.

The problem is that people no longer browse pages on a website by going through home pages. They re coming from Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, blogs, Google+ and Google search ... Read more »

Q: I am thinking about pursuing law, but there are several questions I have. How long does it take to make partner in a firm? How do I apply for financial aid while in law school? If I want to major in anthropolgy, is that okay, or should I chose another major?

A: The length of time depends on the type of firm and there can be a lot of variation. At a small firm, it could be just 5 years to much longer. At a large firm, anywhere from 7 to 11 (or more). The financial aid application process is similar to the process used for undergrad. Majoring in anthropology is fine.

Actually, one of my close friends in law school was an anthropology major in undergrad. In terms of a minor, you might want to consider a subject that will help sharpen skills that are necessary to succeed in law (i.e.written oral communication, logic/reasoning). Some potential ones could include English literature, history, political science, economics, or psychology.

#Arizona Illegal-Immigrant Law Draws Strong Opposition

Related

The toughest anti-illegal-immigrant measure in a generation passed the Arizona legislature this week. If signed, as expected, by Republican governor Jan Brewer, the law will give local police sweeping new powers in regard to undocumented workers. Currently, immigration offenses are violations of federal, not state, law, and local police officers only can inquire about a person's immigration status if that person is suspected of another crime. Under SB1070, however, Arizona police will have the right to stop anyone on "reasonable suspicion" that they may be an illegal immigrant and can arrest them if they are not carrying a valid driver's license or identity papers.

Passions about illegal immigration run high in Arizona, a point of entry for thousands of undocumented workers going to the U.S. from Mexico, and tensions were heightened by the recent murder of a rancher in a remote border area where illega ... Read more »

1. What is Arizona Immigration Law?

The Arizona immigration law SB1070, titled Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act, is an act that was approved on Monday, April 19, by the Arizona Legislature. It was then signed into Arizona law on Friday, April 23, 2101 by Arizona s Governor Jan Brewer.

The Arizona immigration law SB1070 text includes provisions that add state penalties that are related to enforcing immigration law, such as harboring or transporting illegal immigrants, trespassing, employer sanctions, human smuggling, and alien registration documents.

The trespassing provision of the new Arizona immigration law is one of the first of this kind of law to be enacted in the U.S. In The newest reports regarding state immigration laws by the National Conference of State legislature has shown that only a few states have ever attempted to set up a state trespassing violation in response to unlawful presence. On March 7, 1994, Governor Wilson signed into law AB 971 (Ch 12/94, Jones) referred to as the Three Strikes and You're Out criminal sentencing measure. In November, the voters reaffirmed the measure by overwhelmingly approving Proposition 184, an initiative that is essentially identical to Chapter 12. The measure is the most significant change to the state criminal justice system in more than a generation.

In January, we published The Three Strikes and You're Out Law A Preliminary Assessment. This analysis summarizes the findings of that piece, provides more up-to-date data, and recommends that the state closely monitor the implementation and impact of the Three Strikes law.

The Three Strikes law significantly increases the prison sentences of persons convicted of felonies who have been previously convicted of a violent or serious felony, and limits the ability of these offenders to receive a punishment other than a prison sentence. Violen ... Read more »

In today's fast-paced, technologically complex economy, businesses rely on project managers to shepherd projects through to completion. According to the Association for Project Management, "at its most fundamental, project management is about getting things done through people." In practice, project managers may orchestrate development of a new product, an overhaul of business processes, or a corporate restructuring. The common element is a big-picture coordination of activities according to a schedule and budget, combined with a need to manage risk and uphold quality standards.

A master's degree in project management cultivates the technical and theoretical knowledge critical to effective project leadership. Available a variety of formats, the master's in project management generally takes a year or two to complete. Working professionals can earn a master's degree online, applying the skills they learn directly in the workplace.

#Arizona State Senator Sylvia Allen Suggests Law Making Church Attendance Mandatory for Everyone

Arizona State Senator Sylvia Allen (R) was discussing a bill Tuesday that would allow citizens to carry concealed weapons and bring them into public buildings.

Along the way, she decried the moral decay of our country and suggested offhand that the legislators should be considering another bill to fix that:

How we get back to a moral rebirth in this country, I don t know, since we are slowly eroding religion at every opportunity that we have. Probably we should be debating a bill requiring every American to attend a church of their choice on Sunday to see if we can get back to having a moral rebirth. That would never be allowed.

Forced church on Sunday for everyone! (Tell me again, Christians, how your religious liberty is being threatened ?)

Not that going to church would do anything. We obtain our morals independently ... Read more »

Private ownership of guns Edit

Private ownership of guns and their relationship to domestic violence casualties is a significant variable used for political leverage in the policy debate. While many shootings occurring in the course of a mutual argument of passion, others occur where a partner or family member of a "romantic" or familial relationship, who is an ongoing victim of domestic physical abuse or sexual abuse. uses the force of a firearm in self-defense action against a perpetrator who also happens to be known to or related to the victim. As a corollary, in such policy advertising campaigns, the comparison of "domestic" gun casualties is usually not accompanied by murder and assault prosecution numbers stemming from the shootings occurring in that context. Marketing folks wear many hats. Marketing divisions oversee advertising, market research, media planning, public relations, product pricing, distribution, customer support, sales strategy, and community involvement. Over the last 10 years, the industry has witnessed radical changes, including the influx of social media and a new wave of ways to connect with potential and current consumers.

"Companies make the mistake of thinking that marketing is just 'one' thing, but marketing is everything that the consumer encounters when it comes to your business, from advertising, to what they hear, to the customer service that they receive, to the follow-up care that you provide," writes Laura Lake on the Marketing site she maintains for About.com. "It's all marketing and creating the decision within the consumer whether or not to choose you initially or for repeat business."

#At a glance: Supreme Court decision on Arizona s immigration law

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled largely in favor of the federal government in a case involving Arizona's immigration law (SB1070), striking down most of its key provisions. However, it upheld the most controversial provision involving police checks on people's immigration status while enforcing other laws.

A 5-3 ruling

The majority included Justice Anthony Kennedy, Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Steven Breyer, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

The minority included Justice Antonin Scalia, Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito.

"Arizona may have understandable frustrations with the problems caused by illegal immigration while that process continues, but the state may not pursue policies that undermined federal law," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion.

"The national government has significant power to regulate immi ... Read more »

Russian labor law. while adhering to international standards in most key areas, differs from EU and US law in significant ways that may increase the burdens placed upon an employer. While the letter of the law is extremely exacting, in practice there are many ways in which employers can and do get around the laws. Not only is there a difference in the way that the laws are laid out but also in the way that they are enforced. Differing types of software businesses in Russia – including software outsourcing providers and ISVs – require differing levels of adherence to the labor code, from virtually none to the necessity for full compliance.

The most recent version of the Russian Labor Code was adopted in 2001 and went into effect in 2002. Like most Russian regulations, software industry legislation is significantly more complicated than similar legislation in the US or UK. This is because there are major differences not only in the specific legislation, but also in the way peo ... Read more »

Many British period dramas focus on the upper class folk. This one, by contrast, brings us face to face with the working class, with their appalling living conditions, clothing and poor hygiene.

Our hero is based upon a real-life figure, William Garrow (1760-1840). He is idealistic, trying to make the law work for those who are unable to help themselves and is well sexy in this version. Thanks to him, many of the rights we now take for granted, came to be accepted.

There are just four episodes of this fine series. I hope that the BBC will see fit to make more, as there is a lot more to be said.

#What is the law of Christ?

Question: What is the law of Christ?

Answer: Galatians 6:2 states, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ ” (emphasis added). What exactly is the law of Christ, and how is it fulfilled by carrying each other’s burdens? While the law of Christ is also mentioned in 1 Corinthians 9:21, the Bible nowhere specifically defines what precisely is the law of Christ. However, most Bible teachers understand the law of Christ to be what Christ stated were the greatest commandments in Mark 12:28 31, “‘Which commandment is the most important of all?’ Jesus answered, ‘The most important is, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” The second is this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no other commandment great ... #Australia to toughen citizenship laws to combat terrorism - BBC News

Australian PM Tony Abbott has announced a push to toughen citizenship laws and tackle those inciting hatred in an attempt to target domestic extremists.

He said citizenship for dual nationals involved in terrorism could be suspended or even revoked.

People born in Australia could also lose some privileges if they broke anti-terror laws, he added.

Officials have warned that the country faces a growing security threat from radical Islamists.

Dozens of Australian nationals are thought to be fighting for Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq and Syria.

Experts are worried about the effect of returnees - and on those who support them - on domestic security.

"It has long been the case that people who fight against Australia forfeit their citizenship," Mr Abbott said in a speech at the federal police headquarters in the capital, Canberra.

"So Australians who take up ... Read more »

Why do I need a disability lawyer?

You may choose to work with the employer or agency to resolve your disability benefit issue and you are encouraged to do so. Once the entity refuses to cooperate any further however, having an expert disability lawyer advocating for your needs and working with the employer may help expedite your claim. For non-SSD issues, the disability lawyer can help you litigate, if necessary.

SSD issues are not resolved in a court of law, like other legal matters. Instead, you will be granted a hearing with an administrative law judge that is the equivalent of a bench trial. Not every lawyer will be familiar with these proceedings, so it is in your best interest to find an expert Social Security Disability lawyer that will handle your case with professionalism, explain the distinctions and procedural matters of the case, and help you file for an appeal if necessary.

When should I apply for Social Security Disability benefits? ... Read more »

The body of law that governs the legal relations between or among states or nations.

To qualify as a subject under the traditional definition of international law, a state had to be sovereign: It needed a territory, a population, a government, and the ability to engage in diplomatic or foreign relations. States within the United States, provinces, and cantons were not considered subjects of international law, because they lacked the legal authority to engage in foreign relations. In addition, individuals did not fall within the definition of subjects that enjoyed rights and obligations under international law.

A more contemporary definition expands the traditional notions of international law to confer rights and obligations on intergovernmental international organizations and even on individuals. The United Nations. for example, is an international organization that has the capacity to engage in treaty relations governed by and binding under international law ... Read more »

Physicists will tell you that the laws of physics aim to describe the world around us so that mathematicians and other physicists can understand what is going on. Physicists, for better or worse, tend not to talk in terms of hosts of golden daffodils fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Instead they use shorthand phrases like, "force is equivalent to the product of mass and acceleration .” Or more likely, perhaps, "F equal M-A.”

Describing the world of physical laws

So when a physicist says the laws of physics describe the world around us, it's true, but only up to a point. The description afforded by these laws is extremely limited. The laws of physics describe a bare minimalist world, devoid of irrelevant detail and populated with a panoply of simplifying assumptions.

The laws of physics do not cover love or life. The laws of physics steadfastly avoid truth, beauty and charm. ... Read more »

The Master of Business Administration is one of the most popular and sought-after degrees available today. As the world moves to an increasingly corporate and service-based economy, companies have an ever-growing need for business savvy and certain sets of technical skills. And an MBA-holder is likely to have those skills and savvy. According to a recent New York Times article, "the term MBA has become synonymous with raw business talent. Pay scales have risen accordingly, and overall, the future looks bright for MBA students."

In 1965, fewer than 10,000 MBAs were granted to U.S. students. In 1977, the number rose to 48,000 and in 1998, it was 94,000. Even more interesting, sometwo thirds of these degrees are awarded not to full-time students, but to part-time or distance students, often subsidized by their employers. These are people looking to advance their careers, to move to a more rewarding career or even to start their own businesses. According to a su ... Read more »
