#What is it like earning a degree from Western Governors University?
Brian Feeny. Harvard Grad Student
I finished an undergraduate degree at Western Governors. The experience is very different than traditional college. I was in the BSIT program. There was not lectures or recorded lectures like you would have in a traditional school. There was a lot of web based instruction. A lot of the teaching was in effect teaching yourself. Some people work well with this. I find that it misses the element of socialization, which is unfortunate, because socialization can be very enriching.
My belief is they could be doing a better job of distance education. Some of the pro s are that you pay a fixed tuition amount, and can literally take as long as you want to complete a class. There is no firm letter grade given, instead its more of a pass/fail with passing meaning that at least a B was achieved. The rubrics they publish are usually very good about helping guide you to a succes

The line between "legal advice" and "legal information" is often blurred. As a general matter, only a lawyer may give actual legal advice, whereas any non-lawyer may recite legal information. Furthermore, it is generally illegal for a non-lawyer or unlicensed attorney to offer legal advice or otherwise represent someone other than himself or herself in a court of law.
Unlike legal information, legal advice refers to the written or oral counsel about a legal matter that would affect the rights and responsibilities of the person receiving the advice. In addition, actual legal advice requires careful analysis of the law as it applies to a person's specific situation - as opposed to speculation based on generic facts.
From a legal standpoint, the giving of legal advice is tantamount to the practice of law, and only a licensed attorney with whom one has formed an attorney-client relationship with may give actual legal advice. Because of the obligations that arise from the

#What is law of large numbers? Definition from
Part of the Mathematics glossary:
The law of large numbers is a principle of probability according to which the frequencies of events with the same likelihood of occurrence even out, given enough trials or instances. As the number of experiments increases, the actual ratio of outcomes will converge on the theoretical, or expected, ratio of outcomes.
For example, if a fair coin (where heads and tails come up equally often) is tossed 1,000,000 times, about half of the tosses will come up heads, and half will come up tails. The heads-to-tails ratio will be extremely close to 1:1. However, if the same coin is tossed only 10 times, the ratio will likely not be 1:1, and in fact might come out far different, say 3:7 or even 0:10.
The law of large numbers is sometimes referred to as the law of averages and generalized, mistakenly, to situations with too few trials or instances to illustrate the law of large numbers. Thi

According to the Nebraska Lemon Law, a car must be less than one year old, purchased in Nebraska, and under warranty to qualify as a lemon. You must also have brought the vehicle to the dealer four or more times to repair the same problem or have been without use of the vehicle for 40 or more days due to a defect.
Resolving a lemon law dispute with arbitration is faster and less expensive than taking a car manufacturer to court. With this informal process, you and the car manufacturer testify before an arbiter about the condition of your vehicle and its history of repairs. The arbiter then makes a decision on whether the manufacturer should reimburse you for the car based on the facts presented. Cases usually take about 40 days from the time of the arbitration hearing. If the arbiter decides in the car manufacturer's favor, you may still sue in court.
To prove your car is a lemon, you may hire an attorney to help you present your best case. With or without an attorne

#Public Domain Sound Recordings
Sound Recording Rule of Thumb:
There are NO Sound Recordings in the Public Domain in the USA.
Songs and Musical Works have always been protected under U.S. federal copyright law. But sound recordings and records were so new and rare in the early 1900s, they were not included in the Copyright Act of 1909. Until 1976, sound recordings were protected by a hodge-podge tangle of state, county, and city laws. Many state and local laws included sound recordings under common law, which meant that ownership was forever and, unlike copyright protection, ownership of a sound recording would NEVER expire.
The Copyright Act of 1976 created a copyright category called Sound Recordings that now provides federal copyright protection for CD's, MP3's, WAV files, records, and other music recordings made after February 15, 1972. These Sound Recordings receive copyright protection for 70 years after the death of t

The employment laws on changing a job description favor the employer in most situations. Generally speaking, an employer can change a job description whenever it is convenient to the company. In some situations, a change of job description requires negotiation with the employees or with a union.
Job descriptions and the employees who fulfill them are protected when a formal employment contract has been established. Written employment contracts may contain language that specifies a job role and duties but often focus on salary, benefits, work location and title. When signing a contract, prospective employees should ask for language that spells out what role they are expected to fulfill and whether or not that role can be changed without notice. Corporate needs change, and companies have a right to change job descriptions accordingly.
Employment laws developed for protected or special interest groups can shield employees from specific changes in their job descriptions.

#Q - A: Self-Referral
Under Medicare and Medicaid
The following information is not intended as legal advice. It is a general description of prohibitions and permissions. For rulings on specific circumstances, individual legal counsel should be sought. (ASHA does not offer legal counsel. Professional associations that do, typically charge a fee to members for the service.)
Self-Referral is referral by a physician to an entity with which the physician or a member of the physician's family has a financial relationship. The relationship is such that the physician would earn a financial return based on the success of, for example, a speech and hearing clinic in which the physician invested. The Stark II law (introduced by Rep. Pete Stark, D-CA) designates ten categories of Medicare and Medicaid health services for which self-referral is prohibited. Speech-language pathology services, durable medical equipment, orthotics and prosthetics

#Questions over Tory law firm used by Grant Shapps to silence constituent in second job row
Grant Shapps used a law firm retained by the Conservatives to force a critical constituent to say that he had not pursued his business interests after becoming an MP
Comments
Grant Shapps used a law firm retained by the Conservatives to force a critical constituent to say that he had not pursued his business interests after becoming an MP.
The Conservative party chairman hired Hill Dickinson to pressure one of his constituents to take down critical comments from the internet last November.
Hill Dickinson was the same firm that the Tories used three months earlier in August 2014 to accuse Conservative Grassroots , an activist organisation, of giving the "false impression" that it was affiliated to the Conservatives.
Brian Binley, a senior Tory MP who sits on the party s ruling board, said that he would raise the issue at its next meeting in a fortnigh

#Real estate transactions
real estate transactions: an overview
Real estate transactions are governed by a wide body of federal statutes and a combination of state statutes and common law. The requirements established by state law often differ significantly from one state to the next.
Real estate brokers are employed as the agent of the seller in order to obtain a buyer for their property. See Agency. The contract between the broker and seller is called a listing agreement. The agreement may be an open agreement whereby the broker earns a commission only if he or she finds a buyer. A listing is exclusive if the broker is the only agent entitled to a commission for finding a buyer. Under an exclusive arrangement, a broker may be entitled to a payment even if the seller finds the buyer without the brokers aid. Real estate brokers and salesperson are licensed and regulated by local state laws. See, e.g.. California Civil Code § 2079. Professional or

#Retirees cheerchange to law
Retirement home can serve alcohol without license
Associated Press
BLOOMINGTON Residents of a Bloomington retirement home are enjoying their successful push for a change to state law to allow the serving of alcohol at Indiana s nursing homes and retirement communities.
Meadowood Retirement Community residents and guests packed a reception before dinner Friday where they enjoyed snacks, music and beer and wine provided by the facility something state excise police ordered stopped last year.
But some residents campaigned during this year s legislative session for an amendment to state law so that retirement centers could serve alcohol without having to obtain a state liquor permit as required by bars and restaurants.
The new law is important to the retirement community s residents for much more than its allowance of serving alcohol, though, Meadowood resident Ron Kovener told the Herald-Times.

#Real Estate Law
The term real estate generally refers to ownership or use of land. Real estate law is a branch of civil law that covers the right to possess, use, and enjoy land and the permanent man-made additions attached to it. Real estate law directly or indirectly impacts most of us on a daily basis, affecting homeowners, renters, landlords, home buyers and home sellers.
In the United States, every state has exclusive jurisdiction over the land within its borders. Each state has the power to determine the form and effect of a transfer of real property in its jurisdiction. As a result, state law requirements vary significantly from state to state.
Real Property & Personal Property
There are generally two types of property: real property and personal property. Most of the legal concepts and rules associated with both types of property are derived from British common law. Back then, "real property," often shortened to just property, generally refer

Sharia or Shari'a is the body of Islamic law. The term means "way" or "path"; it is the legal framework within which public and some private aspects of life are regulated for those living in a legal system based on Muslim principles of jurisprudence. It is not actually part of the canonical Qur'an ; that is to say, it is not believed to be the direct word of Allah by Muslims, but rather the interpretation of it.
Sharia deals with many aspects of day-to-day life, including politics, economics, banking, business law, contract law, sexuality, and social issues. Some Islamic scholars accept Sharia as the body of precedent and legal theory established before the 19th century, while other scholars view Sharia as a changing body, and include Islamic legal theory from the contemporary period.
There is not a strictly codified uniform set of laws pertaining to Sharia. It is more like a system of devising laws, based on the Qur'an, Hadith and centuries of debate,

#Puerto Rico to boost cash flow after key bill signed into law
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, July 3 A key bill that will boost Puerto Rico's cash flow was signed into law Friday, the governor's office said, allowing the commonwealth to raise $400 million in Tax & Revenue Anticipation Notes (TRANs) from three public insurance corporations.
Puerto Rico's governor dropped a bombshell on creditors earlier this week by saying the island needed to restructure debts to solve its fiscal problems.
"This measure is necessary due to the absence of the commonwealth's usual liquidity sources, and will help keep Treasury's cash flow, which is needed for the government operations," the government statement said of the TRANS notes.
The TRANs measure also calls for suspending monthly payments set aside for general obligation debt, although the government warned this action does not imply the commonwealth will not meet due payments with its bondholders in a timely manner.

#Question of Law legal definition of Question of Law
Question of Law
An issue that is within the province of the judge, as opposed to the jury, because it involves the application or interpretation of legal principles or statutes.
At any stage in a proceeding, before or during trial, a judge may have to determine whether to let a jury decide a particular issue. In making this determination, the judge considers whether the issue is a question of law or a question of Fact. If the question is one of fact, it should be decided by the jury at trial. If the question is one of law, the judge may decide it without affording the parties the opportunity to present evidence and witnesses to the jury.
A question of law involves the interpretation of principles that are potentially applicable to other cases. In contrast, a question of fact requires an interpretation of circumstances surrounding the case at hand. Resolving questions of fact is the chief function

#Real property
real property (land law): an overview
Property signifies dominion or right of use, control, and disposition which one may lawfully exercise over things, objects, or land. One of the basic dividing lines between property is that between real property and personal property. Generally, the term real property refers to land. Land, in its general usage, includes not only the face of the earth but everything of a permanent nature over or under it. This includes structures and minerals.
There are further divisions within the real property classification. The most important are freehold estates, nonfreehold estates, and concurrent estates. (Others are future interests, specialty estates, and incorporeal interests).
- Freehold estates are those in which an individual has ownership for an indefinite period of time. An example of a freehold estate is the "fee simple absolute", which is inheritable and lasts as long as the individual and his heirs

Return Vehicle to Dealer or Manufacturer (Buy Back or Lemon Law)
There are two scenarios in which you may be able to return your vehicle to the dealer or manufacturer. The first scenario, known as a “ buy back ”, occurs when you and the dealer from whom you bought your new or used vehicle mutually agree to the vehicle’s repurchase during the first 60 days after you take delivery.
The second scenario is when your new passenger car, light truck or motorcycle has repeated or serious mechanical problems. Maryland’s “ lemon law ," CL §14-1501 through 14-1503. identifies three situations when the manufacturer must replace or repurchase the vehicle:
The same problem has been repaired 4 or more times during the vehicle’s warranty period (24 months or 18,000 miles);
