Oklahoma Statewide Offices

The attorney general's office provides legal counsel and representation for state agencies and employees. The office also represents the interests of Oklahoma consumers, the state's natural resources and Oklahoma crime victims.

The Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspector is the chief financial officer for the State of Oklahoma. The Auditor is responsible for overseeing and reviewing the financial accounts of all government agencies within Oklahoma. His primary function is to account for all of the state�s funds.

The Executive Power of the State is vested in the Governor. As Chief Executive,the Governor exercises supervision over the agencies of the executive branch. The Governor is designated by the Constitution as Commander-in-Chief of the militia of the State, except when in service of the United States. The Constitution also provides that the Governor shall cause the laws of the State to be faithfully executed and shall conduct in person, or in such manner as may be prescribed by law, all business of the state.

The Lt. Governor serves in place of the Governor when the chief executive officer leaves the state, becomes incapacitated or resigns. Oklahoma's Lieutenant Governor also serves as the President of the Oklahoma State Senate, casting a vote in the event of a tie and presiding over joint sessions of the State Legislature. Constitutionally, or by state law, the Lt. Governor presides over, appoints a designee or is a member of 10 state boards and commissions.

The Secretary of State is appointed by the Governor and with the consent of the Senate. he Secretary of State is required by law to attest to the Governor's signature and to file all official acts of the Governor. From Business Services to Legislative Services to International Relations, the Secretary of State�s office provides a host of services to the citizens of Oklahoma.

Oklahoma is a state located in the South Central region of the U.S. The state's name is derived from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning "red people", and is known informally by its nickname, The Sooner State. Among the most geographically diverse states, Oklahoma is one of four to harbor more than 10 distinct ecological regions, with 11 in its borders � more per square mile than in any other state.

Oklahoma Legislative Branch

The Oklahoma House of Representatives is the lower house of the Oklahoma Legislature. Its members are responsible for introducing and voting on bills and resolutions, providing legislative oversight for state agencies, and helping to craft the state's budget.

The Legislature of Oklahoma is bicameral, comprising the Oklahoma House of Representatives and the Oklahoma Senate, with all members elected directly by the people. The Oklahoma Constitution vests all legislative powers of the state government in the Legislature. The Legislature exercises the legislative power by enacting Oklahoma law. The Legislature may legislate on any subject and has certain "necessary and proper" powers as may be required for carrying into effect the provisions of the Oklahoma Constitution. The powers of the Legislature are only limited by the powers reserved to the people, namely initiative and referendum.

The Oklahoma Senate is the upper house of the two houses of the Legislature of Oklahoma. The total number of Senators is set at 48 by the Oklahoma Constitution. The presiding officer of the Senate is the Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma, who is the President of the Senate.
