sports law: an overview
Sports Law encompasses a multitude areas of law brought together in unique ways. Issues such as antitrust, contracts, and torts are quite common. For further information in these areas see:
Sports Law can be roughly divided into the areas of amateur, professional, and international sports. The distinction between a professional and amateur athlete is somewhat tenuous. So-called "amateur" student/athletes at universities often receive scholarships and other forms of compensation. Also, keep in mind that even though an athlete may be defined as an amateur by one organization, he or she may not be an amateur according to another. Of course, this leads to even more confusion. A simplistic, yet useful definition is that amateur athletes participate in sports as an avocation while professional athletes are involved in sports as a vocation.

#STARK LAW - INFORMATION, REGULATIONS, LEGAL SOLUTIONS
Stark law, actually three separate provisions, governs physician self-referral for Medicare and Medicaid patients. The law is named for United States Congressman Pete Stark, who sponsored the initial bill.
Physician self-referral is the practice of a physician referring a patient to a medical facility in which he has a financial interest, be it ownership, investment, or a structured compensation arrangement. Critics of the practice allege an inherent conflict of interest, given the physician's position to benefit from the referral. They suggest that such arrangements may encourage over-utilization of services, in turn driving up health care costs. In addition, they believe that it would create a captive referral system, which limits competition by other providers. (see physician self-referral)
Others respond to these concerns by stating that while problems exist, they are not widespread. Further, these observers

The foreclosure process varies somewhat from state to state, and depends primarily on whether the state uses mortgages or deeds of trust for the purchase of real property. Generally, states that use mortgages conduct judicial foreclosures; states that use deeds of trust conduct non-judicial foreclosures. The principal difference between the two is that the judicial procedure requires court action on a foreclosed home.
The below table represents our current knowledge of which states use mortgages (judicial) or deeds of trust (non-judicial) or both. The table also includes estimated foreclosure timelines for each state. Please check with your local county government to verify this information. Inform us of any errors at info@realtytrac.com.

#Stanford Law - s Larry Kramer on the Law School Revolution
Globalization has transformed the practice and study of law. says Larry Kramer, the dean of Stanford Law School. American law firms have dominated the internationalization of law, but this has spelled major changed for the economic structure of these firms. The biggest law firms in 1980, he said, were 200 to 250 lawyers; now they grown so rapidly they might have upwards of 8,000 lawyers. "And firms that might have had 2 or 3 offices, suddenly have 20 or 30 offices all over the world."
In his Big Think interview. Kramer said law schools must adapt themselves to this new world order. Historically, law schools were seen as just the first step in a legal education: "There was only. a tangential connection between legal education in school and the practice of law. Law schools taught essentially one skill, one core skill, for being a lawyer, which we refer to generically as. how to think like a lawyer." All practical law

#Stalking Legislation
Anti-stalking legislation was first introduced in 1990 in California. Since then, most English speaking jurisdictions have introduced some form of legislation prohibiting stalking behaviour, either using the word stalking or the word harassment to describe the behaviour. Some non-English speaking countries, particularly in Europe, have also introduced anti-stalking legislation more recently, or are considering introducing such legislation in the near future. If you’re unsure of whether or the jurisdiction in which you live or work has stalking legislation in place, see our list of international anti-stalking laws or contact your local legislature or police force to ask about the presence of stalking or harassment laws.
Even where anti-stalking laws have not been enacted, stalking behaviour still occurs and can still cause great harm. If you are being stalked and there is no anti-stalking or anti-harassment law in your jurisdiction, other legislation, s

#Standing Committee on the Law of Patents - SCP.
The SCP was created in 1998 to serve as a forum to discuss issues, facilitate coordination and provide guidance concerning the progressive international development of patent law. #Strict Liability: Dog-Bite Statutes
More than half the states have statutes that make dog owners liable if their dogs cause injury.
More than half the states make dog owners liable if their dogs cause injury, whether or not the owner had reason to think the dog was dangerous. Although commonly called dog-bite statutes, many of these state laws cover all kinds of dog-inflicted injuries, not just bites. They are called "strict liability" statutes because they impose liability without fault—that is, an injured person does not have to prove that the dog owner did anything wrong. (In other states, the "one-bite rule " applies.)
The theory behind these laws is that anyone who has a dog should be responsible for any damage it causes, period. It doesn't matter that the owner was careful with the dog, or didn't know it would hurt anyone, or tried to keep it from injuring anyone.

#State Traffic and Speed Laws
Introduction
This page contains a summary of and links to state laws related to speeding, and in particular excess speeding and reckless driving.
The state name is a link to the traffic laws of the state, or maybe to the general legislative information page, or maybe to the state home page. If the state doesn't have useful information online or I got tired of typing there is no link. If there is a link in the "limit" column it points to information about speed limits in the state: a summary I wrote, the relevant law, or an official DOT web page. For some states I have included links to an online driver's manual. These manuals are not laws and may contain incorrect statements of law. If you have CSS enabled in your browser, the more anti-speed laws should show up with red borders.

#STRANGER ON THE BLOCK - A special report. At Center of Megan s Law Case, a Man No One Could Reach.
By WILLIAM GLABERSON
Published: May 28, 1996
HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. Her name was Megan. Most people do not know his name.
He confessed to strangling and raping her in 1994, the police say. She had just finished first grade. He lived across the street. His is the story of what the country fears.
He had pleaded guilty twice before to sexually assaulting small children. In 1981, a judge had labeled him a "compulsive, repetitive sexual offender." #Stokes s law
Stokes’s law , mathematical equation that expresses the settling velocities of small spherical particles in a fluid medium. The law, first set forth by the British scientist Sir George G. Stokes in 1851, is derived by consideration of the forces acting on a particular particle as it sinks through a liquid column under the influence of gravity. The force acting in resistance to the fall is equal to 6πrηv, in which r is the radius of the sphere. η is the viscosity of the liquid, and v is the velocity of fall. The force acting downward is equal to 4 /3 πr 3 (d 1 - d 2 )g, in which d 1 is the density of the sphere, d 2 is the density of the liquid, and g is the gravitational constant. At a constant velocity of fall the upward and downward forces are in balance. Equating the two expressions given above and s

#Study of the Post Grant Procedures Is Needed Now.
The procedures created by the America Invents Act (AIA) for challenging patents at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) have now been in place for a couple of years. These procedures include: Inter Partes Review (IPR); Post Grant Review (PGR) and Covered Business Methods (CBM). As of June 2015, over 3500 petitions had been filed for the combined procedures. The numbers are way above what the Office expected, but the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) has been churning through the petitions at a rapid rate. The new methods for challenging patents are statutorily required to be completed within a year of institution in most cases, so we are beginning to collect data and discern patterns from those settled or decided cases.
We are seeing that when the claims are considered individually, the PTAB is instituting the procedures 70% of the time and that once instituted, most claims will not survive the procedur

#Studying law
So why study law at university?
Law is a subject where you can develop a range of skills and explore many aspects of human life. Studying Law as an undergraduate gives you the chance to sharpen your mind, strengthen your understanding and deepen your experience across the full range of humanities and social sciences. You acquire both breadth of understanding and depth in the areas that interest you most.
Law should therefore appeal to those who want to develop both abstract thinking and practical problem-solving. And it's easy to see why you don't have to become a lawyer just because you've done a Law degree; many choose not to. A Law degree can give you the skills to be a successful lawyer, but also a successful producer, politician, manager, journalist, police officer or almost any other profession that requires intellectual strength combined with a practical approach to the world.
But why bother doing a (demanding) three year Law degree wh

#Supreme Court upholds nationwide health care law subsidies
Associated Press 6/25/2015 MARK SHERMAN, Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the nationwide tax subsidies underpinning President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, rejecting a major challenge to the landmark law in a ruling that preserves health insurance for millions of Americans.
The justices said in a 6-3 ruling that the subsidies that 8.7 million people currently receive to make insurance affordable do not depend on where they live, as opponents contended.
The outcome was the second major victory for Obama in politically charged Supreme Court tests of his most significant domestic achievement. And it came the same day the court gave him an unexpected victory by preserving a key tool the administration uses to fight housing bias.
Obama greeted news of the decision by declaring the health care law "is here to stay." He said the law is no longer about p

#Suffolk Law Offers More Buyouts Than Harvard, Yale, And Columbia Combined
The results are in. It turns out that a snazzy, mass-transit ad campaign mocking elites is not enough to turn around an entire law school. Law school applications are down because law school isn t a good value, not because law school hasn t been correctly marketed to prospective students.
It looks like Suffolk Law is going to have to face the music. The university has already replaced its president. Now the law school is offering buyouts to tenured faculty and professors with renewable contracts
What s funny is how Suffolk is still adopting the nothing to see here media approach to its declining fortunes. Check out this excerpt from the Boston Globe.
The unexpected change in leadership comes as Suffolk seeks to stabilize its finances and attract students in the college-dense region. Facing a decline in enrollment and revenue, the university announced in June it would freeze employee

#Study Unit: When Does a Theory Become a Law?
When Does a Theory Become a Law?
This is something that comes up quite frequently in discussions between scientists and the general public. How much proof does it take for a theory to graduate to being a law?
Because the words theory and law have such different meanings in the language of science, it is often a difficult question to answer, so instead, I'll start by giving you a few similar questions to answer.
- How perfectly do you have to build a house so that it will become a single brick?
- How well do you have to write to change an entire dictionary into a single word?
- What would you have to do to change an entire symphony into a single note?
If you are thinking that those questions don't make much sense, then you are feeling very much like a scientist who has been asked "How much proof does it take for a theory to graduate to being a law?" A house

#Stun Gun Laws and Permit Requirements
Talk to a Criminal Defense Lawyer
A stun gun is a device designed to stun or immobilize an attacker by administering an electric shock. When a stun gun is activated (usually by pulling a trigger), electricity passes between two metal prongs at the end of the weapon. Touching these electrified prongs against an attacker causes sharp pain.
A Taser is a pistol-type device that shoots a pair of wires tipped with small darts towards the target. The wires carry an electric charge; when the darts hit their target, a shock is delivered as the electric circuit is completed. Original Tasers used gunpowder to propel the darts, but because this delivery device resulted in placing the Taser within laws that regulate conventional firearms, Taser changed the delivery system to use compressed nitrogen instead. But as you will see, this does not mean that stun guns and Tasers cannot still be regulated as a weapon. Stun guns and Tasers thereaf

#Ten Basic Rules for Dealing with In-Laws.
In This Article:
Your in-laws are a crucial part of your spouse 's life. This makes them a crucial part of your life as well. No one ever said it was easy to balance your needs with the needs of others -- especially the needs of an entire new family. But creating family harmony is possible -- and it's very much worth the effort.
You realize it won't be easy to build bridges -- and rebuild some that have been burnt -- but you also realize that it's a valuable way to spend your time. The return you get on your investment will last the rest of your married life. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Work with your spouse.
This is the key rule, numero uno, the whole enchilada. As my wonderful husband reminded me last night, dealing effectively with in-laws all starts with first working conflicts through with your spouse. Remember, you're in this together.
Never put your spouse in a situation w

#Online Environmental Law Programs - Online MELP and LLM Programs - Vermont Law School
With each passing season, we see the potential effects of climate change in action. Communities around the world face the threat of unprecedented flooding and drought, record-breaking snowfalls and wildfires, and more violent storms.
Meanwhile, policy makers pass over alternative energy solutions in favor of new pipelines, more offshore drilling and widespread fracking. Energy transmission infrastructure creates dangerous bottlenecks between generators and users. Energy law and regulation fail to keep pace with development and demand, leaving our water, land and shorelines contaminated and threatened.
Energy infrastructure is, of course, only one of our concerns. Our planet is under increasing pressure. Communities and whole regions remain at risk for water scarcity and food insecurity. Farmers are unable to bring their previously abundant supply to market, impacting the food syst

#Tax Law - Guide to Taxation Law.
What is Tax law? It covers the rules, policies and laws that oversee the tax process, which involves charges on estates, transactions, property, income, licenses and more by the government. Taxation also includes duties on imports from foreign countries and all compulsory levies imposed by the government upon individuals for benefit of the state.
The intricate body of tax law covers payment of taxes to a minimum of four levels of government, either directly or indirectly. Indirect taxes are assessed against products and services that are meant to be consumed, but are paid to an intermediary. For example, when you buy coffee at a local corner store, the retailer charges you tax on your coffee, which he/she subsequently pays to the government. Direct taxes are those you pay directly to the government and are imposed against things like land or real property, personal property, and income.
There is a seemingly endless list of en

#Taft law school

Reply #7 on: April 06, 2011, 04:11:27 AM
Yeah, but how much do those FL law schools cost? I think money is a big reason someone might want to go to an online school. At $7,920.00 per year, it s affordable. Not to mention the fact that one can do it while working or while abroad.
Ok, I did some research on this. I hope it clears up the accreditation question.
Taft Law School is accredited through the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council. This is the national accrediting body that accredits distance learning schools, allowing them to legally bestow degrees to their students. This accreditation body is 100% legitimate and recognized by the U.S. government. If you go to FAFSA.org, and type in Taft you will see Taft University System (of which Taft Law School is a part) show up. This is evidence that it is a legitimate, accredited schoo

#Tax Laws and Filing Requirements
About U.S. Taxes
The United States has several different sets of tax laws. Federal tax law applies to taxes paid to the United States in Washington, D.C. State tax laws apply to taxes paid to the state in which you live. In some places (but not in Ann Arbor), there are also local or city taxes. It is important to comply with all federal, state, and local tax laws that apply to you.
The federal tax system is a graduated tax system, which means that the percentage of tax one pays is dependent on the amount of income one earns. If you earn a small income, you pay a smaller percentage in tax, but if you earn a larger salary, you pay a higher percentage. The Michigan State tax is a fixed percentage, that is, all Michigan State residents who pay taxes pay the same percentage.

Overview
Child Labor Laws cover any employee under 18 years of age. Once an individual reaches age 18, they are considered an adult under child labor laws.
The Texas Child Labor Law ensures that a child is not employed in an occupation or manner that is harmful to the child's safety, health or well-being. It is illegal to employ a child under age 14 except under specific circumstances described on this page.
State law allows TWC to adopt rules regarding employing children. Our rules ensure that employment does not interfere with a child's education and does not pose a threat to the child's health, safety or general well-being.

#Ten Signs You re Being Bullied At Work
Chances are if you work with others, youll be bullied at some point in your career.
In the U.S. where the practice is being studied, an estimated 37% of workers, or about 54 million people, have been bullied at the office, or repeatedly mistreated in a health-harming way, according to a 2007 Zogby International survey. The percentage balloons to 49% of workers, 71.5 million people, when witnesses are included.
The problem is, however, unless you’re at the receiving end of severe abuse, you’re unlikely to realize it.
Experts say there’s a general lack of awareness about the bullying and the types of behaviors the term encompasses. This often prevents people from realizing that a boss or co-worker is a bully. There’s also an element of personal shame involved.
“They’re sinking into a really bad state emotionally, finding it harder to go to work and it might even affect their job performance,” says David Yamada,

#Texas Legal Ages Laws
Overview of Texas Legal Age Laws
Texas, as do many other states, recognizes 18 as the age of majority, at which point residents are legally considered adults (as opposed to minors ). But Texas legal ages laws also govern a minor's eligibility for emancipation, the legal capacity for signing a contract or consenting to medical treatment. Also, the legal age for alcohol consumption in all states is 21.
Emancipation of Minors in Texas
Texas law allows for the emancipation of minors in certain circumstances. Any minor petitioning a Texas court for emancipation -- that is, being declared an adult in the eyes of the law -- must be a Texas resident, 17 years old (or 16 and living apart from one's parents), and able to support and manage one's own affairs.
The minor seeking emancipation will have to state the following in his or her petition:
- Name, age, residency of petitioner

The latest U.S. News law school rankings are out. Law school administrators are either cowering in fear or popping bottles of champagne, and law students are getting ready to riot. Law school deans, are you ready to read your report cards and possibly lose your jobs over them?
The U.S. News law school rankings purport to measure the best law schools year-over-year successes (we put best in quotes, because almost every law school in the country receives a numerical rank), but law students and legal employers know that the U.S. News law school rankings measure one thing, and one thing only: PRESTIGE.

#The 10 Law Schools - Most Likely to - Make You a Lawyer - Bloomberg Business
Job prospects finally look a bit better for new law graduates, as we reported Wednesday. although the sunny news is partly due to fewer people enrolling in, and graduating from, law school, leaving less competition for the best jobs.
At some schools, though, job placement rates for coveted positions — ones that require passing the bar, or where students with a J.D. are given a closer look — far exceed the 60 percent overall number the American Bar Association reported this week.
Below are the 10 schools with the strongest record for getting their students these types of full-time, long-term jobs, according to this week's ABA employment report, which reflects outcomes for more than 200 schools and includes positions the programs themselves funded.

No. 11 on Forbes’ most recent list of the nation’s top business schools. a two-year MBA costs $111,000 in tuition and fees. This is the first year Princeton Review has ranked online MBA programs. The motivation, says the company’s director of content development David Soto, is that the number of schools offering online MBAs is growing rapidly, from 68 schools in 2008 to 90 in 2012.
