#Health Care Management (MBA

The MBA/MPH in Health Policy Management is administered jointly by the School of Public Health (SPH), Health Policy and Management Department, and the Graduate School of Management (SMG), Health Sector Management Program.  The goal of this rigorous program is to provide students with a solid foundation in both management and public health in an integrated, structured curriculum that focuses on the U.S. health care system.

Applicants are provided a perspective with a larger public health care systems approach and receive knowledge and skills to make them more effective and efficient managers.  The MBA/MPH in Health Policy Management is an accelerated full-time program leading to the award of both the MBA and the MPH degrees in 2 years, including summers, rather than three years if completed separately.

  • Number of credits: 80
  • Program length:  2 years
  • Full-time or part-time. Full time only
Learning Goals

The MPH program is carefully designed to provide a broad, but rigorous foundation in the core disciplines of public health and in-depth training in the student’s chosen area of concentration with a strong emphasis on mastery of both concepts and skills that enable our graduates to be highly effective practitioners.

Upon completion of the MPH program graduates will have the ability to:

  • Identify the determinants of health and disease;
  • Analyze relevant data to estimate the burden and patterns of disease in communities in order to prioritize health needs;
  • Use systematic approaches to develop, implement, and evaluate public health programs and services;
  • Demonstrate effective communication strategies to educate, disseminate, and advocate for health services and preventive interventions for all members of our communities, especially the disadvantaged, underserved, and vulnerable;
  • Demonstrate the ability to synthesize and utilize data to solve public health problems;
  • Articulate principles of good leadership and demonstrate the ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team;
  • Articulate decisions that are ethical and respect the diverse values, beliefs, and cultures in communities; and
  • Demonstrate professional knowledge and skills for effective practice in Health Policy Management.

The Health Policy and Management concentration prepares students to make the delivery of health care more equitably accessible, affordable and effective for all people, but particularly for vulnerable populations.  Concentrators develop the ability to identify and solve health care problems in a practical way and within a rational conceptual framework. This ability requires understanding the health care system from the viewpoints of those who receive, provide, finance, and regulate services. Courses emphasize the link between developing sound policy and implementing it through good management practices.

In addition to the competencies for all MPH students, all Health Policy and Management graduates will be able to:

  • Analyze how the structures, processes and outcomes observed in the organization, delivery, and financing of health services in the U.S. are related both to one another and to historical and contextual influences, and compare these aspects of the US system to those in other developed nations.
  • Analyze the current healthcare policy issues that face U.S. state and local communities; evaluate policies in terms of their effectiveness, efficiency and equity; and identify the factors influencing successful policy implementation.
  • Assess how political, organizational and occupational structures, cultures, and norms influence the ways in which health care is allocated and provided, analyze how these factors affect changes in health policy and/or systems, and develop strategies to promote an organization’s or constituency’s position.
  • Critically appraise health care quality data and measurement methods for pursuing quality improvement, identify strategies for quality improvement and apply structured approaches for implementing change.

The dual degree requires completion of a total of 80 credits, 46 from the School of Management and 34 credits in residence at the School of Public Health.  Sixteen of the 34 SPH credits must be from the Health Policy and Management Department. For details see the BUSPH Bulletin or download this curricula map .
