Online Universities in Maryland – Search s Top Schools

The University of Maryland University College was established in 1947. Today, it is one of the accredited colleges and universities that make up the University System of Maryland, which is one of the largest university systems in the U.S. The university meets global education demands, and has more than 90,000 students worldwide. Offering online programs, it is one of Maryland s Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) accredited online schools. Its online undergraduate programs consist of 25 degrees and 30 certificates and minors, some of which are in cyber security, East Asia studies, finance, natural science, and philosophy. Its online graduate and doctoral programs, on the other hand, are offered as both online and hybrid degrees. Hybrid degrees entail the completion of online classes and on-site classes. Some of its graduate programs and certificates include accounting, biotechnology, management, and teaching.

The University of Maryland was established in 1856 as Maryland Agricultural College. Today, its flagship campus in College Park is ranked by U.S. News World Report in its top 20 public research universities category. In addition to being a nationally recognized research university, University of Maryland distance learning programs offer thousands of online courses each semester for both University of Maryland students and students attending other universities and colleges. Accredited by the MSCHE, the University of Maryland online degrees consist of asynchronous, synchronous, and hybrid online courses, as you can see from their summer term list. Asynchronous courses allow online students to attend class whenever it is most convenient for them. Synchronous courses, on the other hand, require students to attend online classes at specified periods of time to observe lectures and participate in class discussions. Hybrid courses are a combination of online and onsite studies; students may have to attend some onsite classes or meetings as well as work on their course online. Some of the University of Maryland s discipline areas are American studies, anthropology, education, family science, history, health, philosophy, and religious studies.

The College of Southern Maryland is a public community college with four campuses located in La Planta, Leonardtown, Prince Frederick, and Waldorf. Originally founded as Charles County Community College in 1958, it is one of the colleges in Maryland that is accredited by both the MSCHE and the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). Community colleges usually offer associate degree and certificate programs; however, the College of Southern Maryland has partners with four-year universities and colleges to give its students the opportunity to seek bachelor s degrees as well. Useful to busy adults, the college also has online degree programs, some of which correspond with the bachelor s degrees it offers in conjunction with its partnered colleges. Its online programs include, but are not limited to, discipline areas like general studies, environmental management, accounting, social sciences, and arts and humanities.

Receiving an education from accredited online colleges has several benefits. First, busy adults can study and complete assignments and tests on their own time, not at a predetermined time established by their university. For instance, a stay-at-home parent can take an online quiz while his or her child takes a nap. Or a traveling businessperson can complete an assignment while on an airplane to his or her next destination. Second, online education can be less expensive. There is no moving or commuting involved, and sometimes the degrees themselves can be less expensive. Third, because online course work is completed when and where students want, they can break up their studies into times when they are most awake and attentive. Unlike traditional students who must attend classes that range from one hour to three hours, online students can simply break up lectures, assignments, and reading to times that are conducive for them to retain information.

Some of Maryland s top industries are education, health services, and fishing. As such, those hoping to advance in their education careers or enter into into Maryland s education industry might seek bachelor s, master s, or even doctoral degrees in education, or a particular educational subject, like English, biology, or mathematics. Health services also play a big role in Maryland s economy. This makes degrees in sales, health care administration, human services, and nursing, among many others, pragmatic for health service industry professionals and hopefuls. Fishing is another major industry in Maryland. Many pursuing careers in this industry obtain degrees in fishing and fisheries sciences and management, and operations management.
