#About Westlaw

Westlaw is only available in Marylebone Information Service and Westminster Reference Library. It is a database containing a vast amount of useful legal information covering a variety of subjects in great depth. This is contained within:

• Cases
• Legislation
• Journals
• EU legal documents
• Legal textbooks

There is also current awareness available of what has been added to the database recently.

What publications are contained within this database?

There are a great number of publications books (listed below),  case analysis/law reports and journals, but also databases of amended statutes and  law reports (both UK and EU). On top of all this recorded information this database keeps you up-to-date with current events.

How to search

1. The first search page allows you to search within all documents or within one or several of Westlaw's key areas; cases, legislation, journals, current awareness and EU law. 
2. You can search within one of these areas or within a specific document; just click on one of the tabs. 
3. You can also search using "free text"; this allows you to look for words or phrases within the entire document or look for a citation, title or author.
4. An alternative option, is to use advanced search where you can be even more specific; saying whether you want laws that are in force, the dates you want to search through, plus other fields depending on what you are searching through.

As well as the ability to search there is also the option to browse your way through as far as you like and whilst browsing you always have the option to search within the area you are located.
